Tom Heinsohn — Tommy, to Celtics Nation — returned to the microphone for NBC’s broadcast Sunday, and Boston fans jumped for raspy joy.
Social media exploded with a big green Tommy-love bouquet.
“Tommy is back, baby!” the Celtics Reddit Page exalted. (Heinsohn himself proclaimed it during the broadcast, when his speculation about a 24-second violation turned out to be correct.)
“Tommy is a god-d— National Treasure,” another seconded.
Yes, he’s a homer. “You say ‘homer’ like it’s a bad thing,” he once countered.
On the other hand, Heinsohn has 60 years of pro basketball under his belt, and he spots a lot of trends — and missed calls — that others miss.
And along the way, he picked up many rings as a player to go with two as a coach.
“I think my broadcast partner Mike Gorman said it best,” Heinsohn once said. “He said there’s a generation of fans who know me as a player. And there’s a generation of fans who know me as a coach. And now, there’s a generation of fans who think I’m Shrek!”
The man who’s not afraid to call LeBron James a crybaby, and proclaimed that Aron Baynes’s physique looks like “all of Australia,” is behind the microphone again.
Celtics fans will celebrate. NBA officials, maybe not so much.
