After a winning streak that was supposed to turn their season around the Celtics have reverted to their early season play and right now are looking as flat as any team in the NBA. With last night’s loss in Detroit coach Doc Rivers put his whole team on alert:
“[The start of game] was awful, we are playing awful. I’m clear not doing my job with this team. And I’m serious, I’m not trying to take a bullet for the team. And I told them that. I said, ‘We got to find something where every night, all 12 guys play the same way.’ We did it for three games in a stretch. I told them that games 4 and 5 in that [six-game] winning streak were garbage; We just won the game. I gotta figure that out. I told the guys that, I gotta figure it out. Because I don’t think the guys are honest with each other. I just don’t think we have committed to being a good basketball team.
“I think this team wants everything easy. They want the easy way out. They want to win easy. And I told them the only way you’re going to win easy is your going to have to play hard. The harder you play, the easier the games become. We’re taking the wrong approach. I gotta either find the right combination, the right guys, or we’re going to get some guys out of here. It’s the bottom line. Because this group right now, they are not playing right. It’s in them to play right. But right now they haven’t been — either because I’m not getting to them, or they are not getting to each other. But at the end of the day, either we gotta do that, or we gotta make changes.”
Are changes really coming? Here are some of the more recent trade rumors involving the Celtics.
As Feb. 21
trade deadline looms, sources tell me the Boston Celtics covet Orlando Magic SG J.J. Redick.
Redick is a solid shooter and plays gritty defense for his size, but don’t we already have enough shooting guards? Who would be the one to go if we brought in J.J.?
The Hawks will have a huge amount of cap space for this summer’s free agent frenzy. Dwight Howard and Chris Paul are targets No. 1 and No. 1a right up until both re-sign with their current teams or another team. Things could get interesting after that when Smith may be the next best player available. Danny Ferry will have plenty of questions facing him from who the head coach of this team will be to whether or not Smith is worth the sizable investment it will take to re-sign him.
This one is more of a pipe dream as the Celtics haven’t been mentioned besides Smith’s name in a while. My hope is the magical Danny Ainge can find something that works, but it’s definitely a long shot.
A blogger in Brazil
broke the story that Barbosa wanted out of Boston. That has since been disproven, but it isn’t a crazy thought. In limited playing time Barbosa has shown flashes, but backing up one of the leagues top point guards can’t be easy. I could see him moving as part of a deal, but right now it makes no sense for the Celtics to let him go.
Remember him? That guy we were ready to pencil in as the next Bill Russell and give him the keys to Boston? Fortunately for Celtics fans we went entered the Big 3 era instead and came away with championship banner, but could Danny Ainge be revisiting an old crush? Here is what he had to say:
“Yeah, so we’re monitoring Greg, like all the NBA teams are, but we have not attempted to sign him,” Ainge said Thursday. “But we are monitoring him and having (conversations) with his people just to see where he’s at.” Oden hasn’t played in an NBA game since December 2009, and reportedly wouldn’t return until the 2013-14 season. “I don’t think (he’d be ready to play this year),” Ainge said. “I don’t know any of that for sure, but I would suspect that anybody that would sign him would have their eyes looking more towards his contribution in the future than now.”
